Azovstal completes Phase 2 of shop lighting modernisation

DTEK ESCO has completed Phase 2 of the energy efficient lighting programme at Azovstal Iron and Steel Works of Metinvest Group. In total, 3,773 LED lamps provide better lighting in three shops and save 80% of electricity.

The programme has replaced ceiling and crane lamps, as well as lighting for all inspection racks in the BOF shop and plate mill, installing 2,724 optic LED lamps. In addition, DTEK installed 1,049 LED lamps in the heavy section rolling mill.

“The lighting modernisation programme delivers real results: good light, safety, and savings. Employees have already highly appreciated the new lighting. In future, the initiative will cover the rail and structural mill, lime shop, Fe-bearing slurry processing shop, and other structural units of Azovstal. This is a right trend in the global energy saving move. This project will make the workplaces more comfortable and safer for our employees,” stated Azovstal CEO Enver Tskitishvili.

“The new lighting system will help Azovstal save additional 40,000 MW per year worth UAH 74.6 million. This is equal to a reduction of 35,800 tonnes in CO2 equivalent. We invested the capital and delivered the project on a turnkey basis. We took all the risks and guaranteed energy savings. We applied a comprehensive approach to the project: we did not just replace the old lamps, but redesigned the lighting system and replaced cable networks and switchboards. As an additional benefit of our project we have H&S improvement, comfortable conditions for our employees and better environmental performance”, stated the CEO of DTEK ESCO Serhiy Chulkov.

The lighting reconstruction at Azovstal started at the BOF shop finishing area in March 2019 with the installation of 553 energy efficient lamps.
