In 2008 DTEK’s annual coal production (11 mines and 5 coal enrichment plants) hit 17.6 million tonnes, which made the company Ukraine’s largest coal producer generating 24.4% of Ukraine’s total coal output. As of 31 December 2008 DTEK's industrial coal reserves amounted to 837 million tonnes.

Thorsten Dierckshas, EURACOAL Secretary-General, congratulated DTEK on its membership. "We welcome DTEK as our first corporate member from Ukraine. We understand it has invested heavily to improve the efficiency, environmental and safety performance of the formerly state-owned assets it has acquired and we look forward to the new perspective it will bring to our association", he said.

The European Association for Coal and Lignite, EURACOAL, is the umbrella organisation of the European coal industry. EURACOAL targets to foreground the importance of coal for energy security and independence of the enlarged EU, as well as develop a reliable framework for coal production and consumption in Europe.

DTEK was established in 2005 to consolidate the energy assets of the Ukrainian investment group System Capital Management (SCM) and is the first private vertically integrated energy company in Ukraine. Through introduction of modern technologies, in 2009 DTEK businesses showed a growing coal output - by 0.2% year on year - even at times of economic hardship. The average monthly labour productivity of a miner in 2009 increased from 52.9 tonnes of coal in 2006 to 63.6 tonnes at Pavlogradugol and from 65.3 tonnes in 2006 to 83.0 tonnes in 2009 at Komsomolets Donbassa Mine. DTEK’s thermal power plants are the major consumer of this coal.

DTEK’s CEO Maxim Timchenko noted: “We are very happy to be accepted as EURACOAL member. We have worked hard to introduce management systems matching the European standards in all areas of activity, from corporate governance to safety issues. We seek to share our views on the European industry and benefit from information exchange and new business contacts"
