In 2004 a decision was made by Rinat Akhmetov the President of FC Shakhtar to have the new arena for the club built in Donetsk. The new stadium was designed by ArupSport. The general contractor is ENKA Construction & Industry Co.

Construction of the new stadium was commenced in 2005. The football arena is planned to be completed in 2009. A beautiful park - one of the best in Europe - will be laid out around the stadium.
